Our legal system is complex for everyone. But for those who can`t hire a lawyer, it`s downright intimidating. For 96 years, the Office of the Public Attorney, now the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, has consistently provided free professional legal services to these families and individuals. Volunteer attorneys are stationed at homeless agencies across the county to help homeless people resolve legal issues such as government benefits, consumers, taxes, and cuts. Case referral: Recommendations for legal advice, brief legal advice and comprehensive representation are available in the areas of community support, bankruptcy, consumer, housing, family law, estate planning, government benefits, federal tax disputes, immigration and health law. LASSD provides impoverished residents of the City and County of San Diego with comprehensive, high-quality legal services for individual clients as well as for more complex matters. Pro Bono Opportunities: The LASSD Pro Bono Program, in partnership with La Raza Lawyers of San Diego, Pan-Asian Lawyers of San Diego, Filipino American Lawyers of San Diego, and Earl B. The Gilliam Bar Association offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities for lawyers and non-lawyers in most areas of legal services offered by LASSD. Training and mentoring are available to volunteers upon request. Members of this site can also access a list of ongoing projects and pro bono cases at the Legal Aid Society of San Diego. Opportunities for volunteers to assist low-income, self-represented litigants in eviction cases, curators and injunctions.
