“Intentional ethical mentoring requires trust and always focusing on each mentee`s best interests,” says Johnson. “Modeling ethical behaviour in the context of a personal development relationship can pay off by inspiring mentees to take care of their profession`s ethical obligations and aspirations.” Loyola Law School in Los Angeles Student & Alumni Mentoring Programwww.lls.edu/resources/alumni/volunteer/mentoringprogram/Status: DiscontinuType: Student and Alumni Mentorship Program The value of mentoring is twofold. The mentee gets a mentor to guide them early in their career, while mentors are exposed to new technologies, innovative practice tools, and cultural competencies that can reinvigorate their practice. The program provides students with the opportunity to learn about the professionalism and skills needed to succeed in the practice of law. As with other mentorship programs, each mentor-mentee is matched based on the student`s interest, geographic preference, field of activity and location. The program lasts one year. The mentorship program lasts one semester and is part of the school`s new professionalism course. Students meet several times during the semester in small groups with a mentor to discuss the different roles of lawyers in their practice, different practice attitudes, and elements of professionalism. The College oversees an active mentorship program for students and lawyers. The mentorship program pairs first-year law students with one of more than 150 volunteer lawyers and judges.

This provides students with a tremendous opportunity to establish a one-on-one relationship with a practicing lawyer or judge early in their legal career that can provide insight into legal practice. Mitchell Hamline School of Law offers mentorship programs for freshmen and alumni. First-year students have the opportunity to be paired with a current alumni advocate. The Alumni Advocate ensures that the first-year student succeeds in his or her academic endeavors and provides guidance for the student`s future as a lawyer. Mentorship is critical to the future success of the profession. Organizations engaged in mentoring reinforce the profession`s highest goals in new lawyers and instill a passion for law in more experienced lawyers who help them better serve their clients and the profession. NSU Law Mentoring aims to prepare students to practice law by encouraging mentors to provide practical advice to mentees. The objectives of the program are to assist the mentee in planning the transition from law student to lawyer, including time management skills and goal setting, establishing and maintaining a mentoring relationship with a colleague, understanding strategies, managing clients, cases, projects and staff, and preparing practice techniques. The program places mentees in a group rather than a single mentor-mentee match. Rutgers Camden participates in several mentorship programs that offer students the opportunity to be matched with a lawyer in a specific field of activity/environment, geographic location, or with a specific type of employer. Programs include NJ Law Firm Group 1L Mentoring, the Alumni Mentor Network and Partners in Professionalism.

Gonzaga Law School`s alumni mentorship program connects 1L students with local Gonzaga Law School alumni. This experience is designed to provide students with insight into the legal profession, the realities of legal practice, and the challenges and satisfaction of a legal career. The mentor will also be able to offer advice and guidance regarding the Gonzaga Law School experience. The duration of the mentor/mentee relationship is one year and runs from January of the student`s first year to January of the student`s second year. At the end of January, Gonzaga Law School`s Alumni Association hosts a reception where mentors and mentees are introduced to each other. Many student organizations try to network with lawyers and other professionals who have similar interests or backgrounds. While the Faculty of Law encourages the development of mentorship programs as a mechanism for creating professional networks, the Faculty of Law aims to ensure that students and professionals have a positive experience.
