Part-time workers who are exempt from work on leave receive their basic pay for the hours they are required to work regularly on that day. In addition to the eleven annual federal holidays, Inauguration Day is a twelfth holiday designated by Congress every four years on January 20 following a U.S. presidential election. It is only observed by government employees in Washington DC and the border counties of Maryland and Virginia. Employees must have paid or paid leave status (i.e. vacation, leave, travel allowances or credit hours) on scheduled work days before or after a leave to be eligible for their regular pay for that day. The recognition of the birthday of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. has sparked much controversy. It is not recognized in all states, and in some of the states where it is recognized, it is not paid leave for government employees. And in some states, although it is an official day of recognition, it is not a holiday. Federal employees in the Washington, D.C. area have the right to leave on the day of a president`s inauguration (January 20 following a presidential election). Employees are eligible for this leave if they are in progress – If your company observes statutory holidays (or other holidays), be sure to list them in your employee handbook.

If Inauguration Day is moved to January 21 because January 20 falls on a Sunday, federal employees in the Washington, DC area who would otherwise work on Monday, January 21 will be entitled to vacation on that day. Inauguration Day, January 20, 2017, falls on a Friday. An employee who works in the District of Columbia, Montgomery or Prince George County in Maryland, Arlington or Fairfax counties in Virginia, or in the cities of Alexandria or Fairfax, Virginia, and who must work regularly on the opening day without overtime, is entitled to a leave of absence. (See 5 U.S.C. 6103(c).) There is no replacement leave for employees who do not work regularly on inauguration day./p> Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November each year. It is originally a harvest festival and has become a public holiday. State and local laws may have different policies, so check with your location`s State Department of Labor for vacation information and payment requirements. Sometimes your employment status determines whether you qualify for paid leave from a private company. Full-time and/or seniority workers are more likely to receive paid leave than part-time employees.

The number of seniority days can also determine the number of days of paid leave your employer is willing to give you each year. This year`s inauguration holiday falls on Monday, January 21, 2013, which is also Martin Luther King Jr.`s birthday holiday (see 5 U.S.C. 6103(c).) For federal employees working in the District of Columbia, Montgomery or Prince George counties in Maryland, Arlington or Fairfax counties in Virginia, or the cities of Alexandria or Fairfax, Virginia, Inauguration Day is celebrated at the same time as Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal employees in these regions are not eligible for replacement leave for inauguration day.
