With a holistic approach, Legal Aid of North Carolina provides free legal aid when people need it most, because everyone deserves a lawyer when their home, health, or livelihood is at stake. NC Legal Aid`s team of lawyers, paralegals, social workers, staff and volunteers are dedicated, hard-working and resourceful. But they can`t do it alone. They need your support to increase their service and support capacity. The Legal Aid Partnership Award was created in 2008 to recognize meaningful collaboration between legal aid and non-legal organizations and individuals. In the pursuit of justice, the people legal aid serves are often not only our clients, but also our true partners, and few are better examples than Tamika Hayes. With a heavy heart, the Legal Aid 603 team said goodbye to longtime colleague Breckie Hayes-Snow on May 31. Mr. Breckie`s legal aid career spans more than 25 years, beginning as a supervising lawyer position at the Legal Advice and Referral Center (LARC) in 1996, before becoming the organization`s Executive Director in 2018 and participating in the leadership planning process for the merger that eventually created 603 Legal Aid in 2021.

Hayes testified for four days, sharing her poignant story of decades of abuse. She explained that despite countless separations over the years due to violent incidents, she was never able to break the cycle of violence because she struggled alone with children, rent and student loans to achieve financial security. Her three children also testified, telling the judge about their academic and athletic achievements despite the abuse they suffered, and attributing their success to their mother.
