This course prepares learners for job opportunities by developing marketing tools and skills for interviews. Prerequisite: Completion of 15 program elements This course examines estate planning and administration in Alberta. Learners prepare wills, personal directives, permanent powers of attorney, applications for administration and the granting of an estate in accordance with Alberta law and customary legal practice and procedure. Prerequisites: LEGL1501 candidates must meet all eligibility criteria and follow the application process to be accepted into the internship. The application process is based on the competitive nature of a job search and candidates are responsible for demonstrating a high level of professional and programmatic expectations. Legal assistants have superior computer skills, excellent attention to detail and proofreading, effective time management, prioritization and an understanding of confidentiality. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential in this position. The Legal Assistant Capstone degree program brings together theory and practice in a model law firm. The expected keyboard speed at the end of this program is 60 words per minute. Building on the skills covered in Litigation I, learners examine rules, procedures and documents in the more complex litigation handled in the Court of Queen`s Bench. Learners discuss topics specific to bodily injury, as well as the procedures and paperwork of the Provincial Court of Alberta and the Court of Appeal. The focus is on compliance with the Alberta Rules of Justice and the role of the Legal Assistant. Prerequisites: LEGL1501 A full course load is 5 courses per semester. Students may choose to take fewer courses each semester. However, it will take longer for the program to end. This course introduces the role of the legal assistant in the theory and practice of debt collection. The course focuses on the tasks and documents required for secured and unsecured debts, seizure and collection of rents.

Prerequisites: LEGL1501 The legal assistant diploma is also available online. This gives you the flexibility to learn at home. Your online instructor is available to provide support and feedback via email. This course is an introduction to Microsoft Word and document processing. Learners are introduced to the basic and intermediate skills of Microsoft Word that can be applied to a variety of documents. The focus is on the correct formatting of legal business letters and proofreading. Once you are a student enrolled in a program at chiu School of Business, our student engagement agents can also help you plan. This course will combine classroom study with the Calgary workplace through experiential learning. As representatives of Bow Valley College, students have the opportunity to use their new technical skills. observe/integrate into the office culture; Work on soft skills and communication skills; networking with industry peers; Reference(s); add experience to their resume; can get a job or transfer; and get a review from the host. Regular participation in the internship is the key to success. Throughout the internship, open communication between students, hosts, and student engagement agents is maintained.

Students must complete and submit a student assessment at the end of the internship.
